There was a time………………

There was a time………….

There was a time…………..

  You forgot physical, mental disability.

Locked into dark asylums,

Left to rock, screaming alone silently.

Society feared the unknown,

Invisible sins left to atone.

There was a time…………..

 Education became `special. `

The world started to open,

  Less became more able.

Society showed less shame,

Parents felt less blame.

There was a time…………..

  Inclusion was shouted loud,

Mainstream schools accepted,

 Parents slowly became proud.

Society included, set sights,

We believed we had rights!

There is a time…………

  The clock starts to reverse.

Attacked, independence fought,

Begging, crying to coerce.

Society snatches dignity,

No longer free in disability.

About Maith an cailin

Born in the 1960s, I`m a single Mum of a young adult. I am a full-time wheelchair user, who has been single since a marriage breakdown in 2008. I live in a UK remote village, not easy with a disability but this is a honest account of a ordinary Woman with a disability.
